Catholic Character – Term 2 Week 6
On Tuesday, we reflected on Pentecost as it is celebrated this Sunday through the feast of Pentecost. We remember that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with his disciples. Pentecost means 50 in Greek as the Holy Spirit came to the disciples 50 days after Easter.
This weekend let’s remember that God is always with us and try to listen to God’s words to us. Let us be guided by the Holy Spirit, who was given to the disciples on the first Pentecost and is still with us today, to show our love for God and for other people.
Holy Spirit,
As You appeared as a mighty rushing wind to the disciples, may we feel Your presence with us each day.
As the flames appeared above the disciples’ heads, may our hearts be ablaze with Your love for others.
As You empowered the disciples, may we know Your powers as we seek to do good for others.
Amen.
Frances placed 2nd overall, 1st in freehand, 2nd in clubs and 5th in hoop at Wellington Opens Rhythmic Competition last wekend. Frances also received The Elements Rhytmic Cup for Level 5, Highest Routine Score. The competition was held in Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on 24 and 25 May 2025, where over 100 gymnasts were competing from all over New Zealand.
Newsletter – Week 6
It has been a very busy two weeks in Room 1 since our last newsletter. We have begun to eat our way around the world and Alistair taught us a Fillipino dish called Tulons , Frances made apple strudel from the Czech Republic and shared the recipe and Kora taught us how to make Italian pizza. We have also been to the National Portrait Gallery, taken part in Catholic School’s Day and helped Jo plan Book Character Day. We have also learnt about circuits and electricity as well as finding out interesting facts about inspirational New Zealanders.
Penny
On Wednesday 28 2025 we went to the portrait gallery competition. We looked at some artwork and voted for the best artwork. We also sat down and drew a picture of someone or something that has died or is alive. After that we went to back to school and wrote all about it.
Kora
On Wednesday 28th May Rm 1 went to the National Portrait Gallery we saw lots of different portraits and learned that portraits are not always people. They can be photos, short films and paintings. Once we had seen the whole exhibition we sat at the table and made a star of our ancestors. This was because the exhibition was about ancestors. It was so much fun that I wish we can go a third time.

On Tuesday 3rd of June, we had book character day. In the morning we talked a little bit about our characters, then we went out for a picture on the little kids’ playground. After that we did a bit of a walk across the concrete. The classes paired up to do a quiz. I got paired with Felix. After that we drew some book characters of our choice and said a thank you to Jo. At the end of the day we had the best outfit prizegiving. We had all voted for a person dressed up and the people with the most votes won a book.
Alistair
This week we have been introduced to TUMANAKO (children's artwork Exhibition for a peaceful world). Which means hope. Kora and Frances have been teaming up and there's no winners. I went solo so that I didn't have to worry about telling people what to do. Also this term we have been cooking traditional food every second Wednesday. We have done New Zealand, Philippines, and Czech Republic I am quite exited for koras dish PIZZA!
Frances
This week, my high light was Catholic Schools Day. I liked it because Saint Teresas came to our school and did lots of activities with us. My favourite activities were probably the sports and the art. I hope that we will be able to do more things with them.

Over the past two weeks, the children have begun to explore the cultural significance of Matariki and how the stars represent our special connections to nature. We look forward to each student presenting a colourfully designed star in assembly and highlighting their importance.
For literacy, we are developing an opinion piece for writing and continuing to read and summarise articles about wildlife on read works. The children also continue to work hard at moving through the Lexia Core 5 programme so they can reach the next level. I look forward to presenting the certificates as children complete their latest level.
For maths our focus has been on revising for the PAT test and also continue to work through the Pime course and practice books. For science, we are starting a new unit next week with room 1 from the House of Science, where we will look at skeletons and bones. It has also been pleasing to see the fantastic art work the children have been completing with Miss Bryce on birds and animals.

Harriet: On book character day we dressed up as different characters from books. It was very fun. I dressed up as Winnie the Pooh because he is cute. My favourite book is the chapter book Winnie the Pooh. The parade in the morning was the best because we got to see everyone’s dress up. Dancing was the best.
Felix: On book character day I was dressed up as ninja. I had a sword and had red suit. Ninjas are fast and sneaky. My favourite book is about ninjas. We did a parade. We had a quiz; we had to write down the answers. All quiz questions were about book characters. I won a book and a lollypop for having one of the best costumes.
Shabad: I got dressed up like a dinosaur because they are good and they can run so fast. Dinosaur costume was fun. The best part of the day was the quiz.
Otis: On book character day I dressed up as Tintin. Tintin saves people’s lives, and I like Tintin books. My dad reads Tintin books to me. At the library we got to do a fun quiz, and we wrote answers on a piece of paper. Me and Alistair were in a group. We got lots of answers right.
Violeta: I dressed up as Elsa. I liked when we did the quiz. I liked the book character day. My favourite book is frozen I like Elsa because she can freeze. I liked when I won a prize, a book and a lollipop.
Tanielu: I dressed up as Spiderman. He can spin webs and climb trees. I liked the book character day but the best of all I liked the dance when everyone showed off their costumes.

Tuesday's Book Character Day was a literary fun filled day. We began the day with the book character parade, it was such fun seeing all of the different costume choices. The whole school continued the parade to the library where room one students had book related fun activities for all to enjoy. Kora started us off with an interactive quiz. Penny and Alistair organised a vote and prizes for the best character dress up. Enzo and Felix drew first place with their football and ninja outfits. All of the students had a chance to talk about their book character and their connection to them. It was a memorable day celebrating books and the importance of literature in our lives.
