From the Board: Minister's decision on the ADW proposal to close CMcK school.
Kia ora,
As you know, we've been waiting for a decision from the Minister of Education on the ADW's proposal to close our school at the end of this school year.
Yesterday, we received a letter from the Minister informing the Board of her decision to accept the proposal to cancel the integration agreement for CMcK and close the school on 15th December 2025.
This is very sad news, as we had hoped for a different outcome, having made a strong case for keeping the school open. However, I am grateful for the kind of community we have - one that pulls together in good and hard times to support and care for each other. I believe that is what we will do in this situation.
What happens now?
The Board and Principal will work with the Ministry of Education and the Archdiocese to ensure an orderly and dignified process for winding down. Some of our immediate priorities are:
- Confirming process and support for parents and caregivers who wish to move their tamariki to one of the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese
- Confirm what support is available for our staff
- Keeping you all informed by sharing (as soon as possible) relevant information that we receive from the Archdiocese and the Ministry of Education.
If you have any questions please talk to Kerry, our Principal, or email: Principal@cardinalmckeefry.school.nz.
We may not have the answers immediately but we will get them either from the ADW or the Ministry of Education and pass them on to you.
Please remember, our school is open until the end of the year, and our staff remain committed to giving your tamariki the best school year ever! This is something that the Board is happy about and grateful for.
Nga mihi,
Shola
Presiding member, Board of trustees.
